Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

At a show recently I saw the CUTEST handmade gift tags. These add just right touch for any gift this holiday season. Add a vintage-y look to them by using old postcards, sheet music or photographs. Here are a few of my favorite:

Holiday Love

So with the holidays right around the corner it's only natural that I start obsessing over vintage-y holiday decor. I stumble across the coolest DIY idea for a holiday wreath. It's so easy anyone can do it...and pretty cheap too! You need lots of different sizes of simple round ornaments, a hot glue gun and a wire coat hanger. I am going to post a link to the blog where I found it but here's the jist:
Use a dab of hot glue to attach the top of the ornaments to the ornament so it won't fall off. Fashion your wire coat hanger in to a wreath shape and randomly string on your ball ornaments. How simple and chic is this! Take a look and find the directions at this link: http://www.eddieross.com/eddie_ross/2008/12/no-wire-hangers-well-maybe-just-one.html

And of course take a look at these pics:

It's been a few...

It's been a few since we've blogged and we are sorry about that...but we have been SO busy! Just to fill you in a little, BIRDS not only retails to you the customer but is also represented in the wholesale market. So we have been focusing on both lately and well we are so excited about the new things on the horizon! We have several retail markets coming up where we will be selling BIRDS pieces as well as pieces by Lenora Dame...If you haven't heard of Lenora Dame we know you would recognize her work. Let's put it this way, if you have shopped the accessory section at Anthropologie you have seen some of her handy work! We hope you will become as obsessed as we are because we brought back several beautiful pieces from market this weekend. Here are just a few of her pieces that you can expect at our markets and on the website in the coming weeks (just in time for Christmas shopping!)

We also scouted out some awesome jewelry designers that we can't wait to feature on the site in the future! In the meantime looks for us at Handworks in Jackson, MS and The Holiday Bazaar in Starkville, MS soon. Peace. Love.

Interview with Arco Avenue

Have you heard about Arco Avenue? It's a fantastic shoe and accessories boutique that opened TODAY in Ridgeland at Colony Crossing (next to Summerhouse). BOAW Vintage had the opportunity to sit down with the owner/buyer Katie Miller and get an exclusive interview, check it out!

Laura: You obviously have an interest in fashion...what inspired you to take a leap and open your own store?

Katie: I had a hard time finding a place to shop for shoes in Jackson. I didn't want to spend $300 on every pair of shoes I had, but I didn't want to buy from a huge chain and have the same pair of shoes as a million other women in the country either. The opportunity of getting the perfect retail space came available, and I knew exactly what I was going to do with it... A SHOE BOUTIQUE!

Laura: When it came to decorating your store, what was your inspiration?

Katie: We have mainly a black and white color scheme, and the look is Parisian mixed with natural elements. We have beautiful chandeliers and statement furniture, but it's mixed in with materials like burlap, twine, and seagrass.

Laura: Who/What are your fashion icons?

Katie: I usually go by one rule when it comes to fashion... If I like it, I'm going to wear it whether it's "in style" or not. Using magazines for your fashion guide only goes so far. You've got to figure out what you like, and own it! As far as icons go, Katharine Hepburn is a great one. You can take anything she wore, put it on today, and look amazing. The same goes for Jackie O.

Laura: What brands is your store going to carry?

Katie: Arco Avenue will have several brands and a wide price range. We'll carry Nine West, Adrienne Vittadini, Michael Antonio, DV by Dolce Vita, Kenneth Cole, Indigo by Clarks, and Frye just to name a few. For accessories, we'll have Melie Bianco and Vince Camuto handbags, Betmar hats, Spun by Subtle Luxury and de*nada scarves, Fluxus and Dex outerwear, and Pomp and Plumage hair accessories. We'll have awesome stocking stuffers for Christmas like foot scrubs and bath bombs, butter LONDON nail polish, and leather gloves.

Laura: Why did your decide to focus mainly on shoes?

Katie: There was not a place to shop for shoes here in the metro area. The market is here, and I wanted to fill the gap.

Laura: Are your targeting a specific group or will your products appeal to all ages of women?

Katie: Our shoes and accessories will appeal to all ages. Junior High to 95, there is something here for you!

Laura: What are your fashion picks for fall?

Katie: My fall favorites are Frye boots (of course), satchel bags, and extra long scarves. I could go on and on and on, but I'll be short and sweet for time's sake. You'll just have to come in the store and see!

BOAW Vintage is so excited about this new boutique...I mean Frye boots, scarves and jewelry what more could we want!? Definitely go check it out!!

Wish You Were Here...

I love to travel. In fact it is one of the things that inspires me most. So I couldn't help but think about one of my favorite cities and how I was packing my bags heading there this time last year. NYC! David and I took in the city, wandered aimlessly, tried out new restaurants (PS if you're in the city go to Friend of a Farmer for a life-changing breakfast) and even caught a tennis match at the Open. Bon Voyage for now!

Treasure Hunt

So finding (cool) vintage stuff is not for the faint of heart. Beware of bad parts of town, no A/C, and all around general "sketchiness." David can vouch for some of the interesting places we have found cool stuff. This event coming up sounds like it could be interesting. I was recently talking to my best friend and we were talking about making it an annual tradition. She is going to be in Africa when this one goes down but I may make a loner trip and see if it's worth it. Basically it is the world's largest garage sale...stretching hundreds of miles actually. This could be the ultimate treasure hunt. Think of all the fun, cheap finds. Love it!! Check it out here... http://www.hgtv.com/crafting/tips-for-attending-the-worlds-longest-yard-sale/index.html

Holy Guacamole!

Sooooo...one of my FAVORITE restaurants (good food, good atmosphere, great location) is Babalu. They have the most amazing guacamole dip that they make right at the table for you. I've always wanted the recipe so imagine my surprise when it was featured in the recent issue of Mississippi Magazine. I made it for a little party I had at the house recently and it was a hit! So, I must share the recipe with you so you can enjoy it just as much as we did!

Babalu Guacamole
from Mississippi Magazine May/June 2011

2 Hass avocados
1 tablespoon chopped green onions
1 tablespoon chopped red onion
1 ½ tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
1 ½ tablespoons minced fresh cilantro
1 tablespoon minced sun-dried tomatoes packed in oil
Kosher salt and pepper, to taste
Split avocadoes, remove and discard pit, and scoop meat into a medium bowl. Add remaining ingredients and using a fork or a potato masher, mash until ingredients are well-incorporated. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serves 2 – 4

YUM YUM YUM!

Inspiration from Seaside

If you have ever been to Seaside, you know it has a wonderfully simple, elegant style. At the house we stayed at recently, it had the most romantic and beautiful outdoor curtains. It really just made the space. I found these outdoor curtain ideas at one of my favorite sites Apartment Therapy...check them out here for some super cool ideas http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chicago/outdoor/a-collection-of-outdoor-curtains-149990?image_id=2669477

David better get the tools out...we are so getting some outdoor curtains. : ) I love, love, love the outdoor fabric prints found at Premier Prints Fabrics (love that place and great prices too) you can check those out here: http://premierprintsfabric.com/ I really like the bold print in this zig zag fabric from the outdoor collection.
